Write about the Olympic Flag

Ans. The Olympic flag was created under the guidance of Baron Coubertin in 1913 and was released in 1914. But it was first hoisted in 1920 in Belgium at the Antwerp Olympic games in the main stadium. The flag consists of a white field bearing five equal interlocking rings of blue, dark yellow, black, green, and red with separations wherever two rings intersect. The width-to-length ratio of the flag is 2:3.

17. Write a note on the teaching career in Physical Education

Ans. For choosing teaching as a profession, one must be well qualified with a certified bachelor’s or master’s degree/diploma in physical education from a recognised university. One can become a teacher at Elementary School level, Middle School level, High School and Senior Secondary School level and at the College and University level.

19. Write a short note on Summer Olympic games.

Ans. The Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the Olympiad first held in 1896, is an international multi-sport event that is hosted by a different city every four years. The International Olympic Committee organizes the games and oversees the host city’s preparations. In each Olympic event, gold medals are awarded for first place, silver medals are awarded for second place, and bronze medals are awarded for third; this tradition began in 1904. The Winter Olympic Games were created due to the success of the Summer Olympics.

Only five countries—Greece, Australia, France, Great Britain and Switzerland—have been represented at every Summer Olympic Games. The only country to have won at least one gold medal at every Summer Olympic Games is Great Britain. The United States leads the all-time medal table.

Ans. According to Patanjali, Meditation is the concentration of mind (Chitta) on an impulse(Vritti) without any divergence.

Meditation or “dhyana” is an extreme form of concentration. Meditation is one of the 8 limbs of Yoga. Practicing meditation means to slowly and gently train the mind to be still. It allows mind to focus on one thing and detaches person from all worldly things. Meditation results in a harmony between body and soul. It reduces stress and relaxes your body.

During meditation, one focuses his/her attention and eliminate rampant thoughts that may be crowding the mind and causing stress. This process may result in enhanced emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual well-being.

Physiologically, meditation positively impacts the body by alleviating the impact of energy and work on the body. During meditation, metabolic and heart rate are lowered, which reduces the work load of the heart.

20. Write the aims of adaptive physical education.

Ans. Adapted Physical Education is physical education which has been adapted or modified, so that it is as appropriate for the person with a disability as it is for a person without a disability. The aim of Adaptive Physical Education is to provide all students with special needs, regardless of their disability, the opportunity to participate in physical education, safely and successfully, in the least restrictive environment. It helps the students to achieve physical, mental, emotional and social growth. It also enhances their potential through a special programme especially planned suited for providing them physical education as well as meeting their recreational needs. It not only caters to their physical well-being but also the mental well-being which is equally important. Adaptive Physical Education also helps to develop and build up self-esteem in the students which is an essential component for personality development.

Ans. National Olympic Committees are one of the three constituents of the Olympic Movement, alongside the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Sports Federations

Their role is to ensure the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games by sending competitors and officials as well as to promote the fundamental principles and values of Olympism in their countries, in particular in the fields of sport and education.

They may also nominate interested hosts as candidates for future Olympic Games. There are currently 206 NOCs. The National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are the representatives of Olympism around the world.

The NOCs carry out many different functions in their respective countries, from the development of sport at all levels, to the creation of educational programmes, to the ongoing training of sports administrators. They are also responsible for sending a delegation of athletes to the Olympic Games and, since 2010, to the Youth Olympic Games.

The NOCs ensure that all the programmes carried out at a national level conform to the principles of the Olympic Charter.

Ans. Samadhi is the stage in which one loses personal identity. It is the peak of meditation. It is the union of individual’s soul with the supreme soul. Person remains in the state of Samadhi and his senses are at rest as one is sleeping but his mind remains alert. In this state one is fully conscious and alert.

24. Briefly explain the changes in the playing surface over the years.

Ans. Many of today’s popular sports have been played for hundreds of years. Traditionally, sports were played on natural grass surfaces. Maintenance of grass turf surfaces involves different activities including mowing, irrigation and control of weeds, pests and disease. In 1960s, some sporting organisations started using artificial pitches. Artificial playing surfaces were created with the intent to increase the durability and versatility of the playing surface, thereby enabling multisport use and to provide an indoor surface that was relatively easy to maintain. Coupled with field lighting, the playing hours and income generated increased considerably at sports facilities equipped with synthetic fields. The fields were more durable than natural grass with regard to both seasonal weather conditions and frequency of use. In addition, the maintenance required for artificial surfaces was appealing, even with the higher initial investment. The durability of artificial turf allows continual use.

Ans. According to the Olympic Charter, Rule 8, The Olympic symbol is defined as, “The Olympic symbol consists of five interlaced rings of equal dimensions (the Olympic rings), used alone, in one or in five different colours. When used in its five-colour version, these colours shall be, from left to right, blue, yellow, black, green and red. The rings are interlaced from left to right; the blue, black and red rings are situated at the top, the yellow and green rings at the bottom in accordance with the following graphic reproduction.” The Olympic Symbols are : (i) Olympic Flag (ii) Olympic Emblems (iii) Olympic Torch or Flame (iv) Olympic Torch Relay (v) Release of Doves (vi) Olympic Motto (vii) Olympic Oath (viii) Awards.

The explanation of one of them is given below : Olympic Torch Relay : The Olympic torch relay was the idea of Carl Diem, organizer of the 1936 Berlin Games, where the relay made its debut. Subsequent editions of Olympic games have grown larger and larger, with more runners, more spectators, and greater distances. The 2004 relay reached all seven continents on its way from Olympia to Athens. The relay is now one of the most splendid and cherished of all Olympic rituals; it emphasizes not only the ancient source of the Olympics but also the internationalism of the modern Games. The flame is now recognized everywhere as an emotionally charged symbol of peace.

27. Define Physical Education. Explain the aims and objectives of physical education.

Ans. The word ‘PHYSICAL EDUCATION’ is the combination of two words – ‘Physical’ and ‘Education’. The word ‘Physical’ is related to body or any one or all of the bodily characteristics, that include physical strength, physical endurance, physical fitness, physical appearance and physical health. The word ‘Education’ refers to the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction.

‘Physical Education’ can be referred to an educational process which aims to develop human personality through activity.

According to Physical Education Platform, American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, “Physical education is a way of education through physical activities which are selected and carried on with regard to values in human growth, development and behaviour.”
