SECTION C – LITERATURE

Q.6 Answer ANY SIX questions in 30-40 words each.

a) Why did Prashant ask the children to lie on the sand with utensils on their stomachs?

He did this so that the helicopter pilots would see them and drop down the food packets for them.

b) What incidents during the Everest expedition show Santosh’s concern for her team-mates?

During her Everest expedition, one of her team-mates was in problem – so she made all efforts to look after him but could not save his life – she shared her oxygen and saved his companion during the expedition.

c) How do we defile and outrage the ‘human earth’ that is ours?

Narrow mindedness and beliefs pollute and defile this earth which belongs to all human beings. ‘Hells of fire and dust’ are our own creations. They pollute and outrage the ‘innocence of air that is our own’

d) What does the poet mean by ‘The strength of the tree’ is exposed?

The strength of the tree is exposed when the roots of the tree are pulled out.

e) Why does the author break down in tears after the fire?

After the fire the author realized that he had lost everything – his cat could not be seen anywhere, then all the negative things struck his mind suddenly – the new school, the fire, and his cat which made break down.

f) Why was Jerome’s real intention when he offered to pack?

Jerome wanted to supervise the work instead of doing it himself

g) What does the poet wish for the snake?

The poet wishes that the snake should be allowed to go. It should not be killed by the man.

Q.7 Answer ANY TWO of the following in about 120 words each.

a) ‘Love is mutual’. Illustrate this with reference to the story, ‘The Bond of Love’.

It is said that love begets love. Even the animals understand the language of love. They respond to love in equal measure, author’s wife develops deep affection for the pet beat, he nourishes him like a child and takes care of his needs. The same was reciprocated by Bruno too. He felt sad when he was sent to the zoo, he didn’t take food and felt very sad—he recognised her even after a gap of three months when she visits the zoo.

b) “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. Do you think the story “The Last Leaf” supports this statement?

In the story, Sue and Johnsy are struggling artists. They both are good friends – once Johnsy is suffering from pneumonia – she gets frustrated and loses her will to live – she wrongly believes that she will die with the falling of the last leaf on the ivy creeper== Sue who was optimistic and always remains a constant companion to her friend – she tries her best to take care of Johnsy and instil in her hopes and a desire to live – She, with the help of Behrman helped Johnsy in regaining her wish to live in their own ways. Sue proves that a true friend is one who we can turn to in our times t trouble. Thus, the story “The Last Leaf” supports the given statement.

c) The best way to deal with a crisis is not to lost your calm. Discuss this statement with reference to the behaviour of Gerrard in the play.

A cool person is more successful than the one who loses temper or acts rashly – In this play Gerrard not only saves himself but also is able to catch the intruder on the basis of his presence of mind and calm and cool nature even in adverse and in dangerous situation.
