Class III – English – Chapter 5 – Prepositions

Read the sentences:

a) The cherries are the bowl

b) The rats jumped the river.

c) The boy is standing the bench.

The above sentences does not make any sense. Now compare these sentences with the following:

d) The cherries are in the bowl.

e) The rats jumped into the river.

f) The boy is standing on the bench.

In sentence ‘d’, the word ‘in’ shows the relation between the ‘cherries’ and the ‘bowl’.

In sentence ‘e’, the word ‘into’ shows the relation between ‘jumping’ and the ‘river’.

Similarly, in sentence ‘f’, the word ‘on’ shows the relation between ‘is standing’ and the ‘bench’.

The words in, into, on are Prepositions.

Note:- A Preposition shows the relation between a noun or pronoun with another word in a sentence.

A few prepositions are mentioned below:

in, on, at, under, below, behind, over, near, into, in front of, upon, beside, between, after, before.

3. Look at the following pictures and note the usage of prepositions.

All the bold words in the sentences above are Prepositions.

4. Underline the prepositions in the following sentences:

a) The little boy hid behind his mother.

b) The people gathered in the stadium.

c) Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall.

d) Don’t stand near the electric pole.

e) The books were arranged on the shelf.

f) The books were arranged in the book rack.

g) Distribute the chocolates among the students.

h) Distribute the chocolates between the two brothers.

i) The princess was locked inside the castle.

j) July comes after June.

k) The birds flew over the field.

l) Rohit is sitting beside his father.

m) The river water is flowing above the danger mark.

n) The river water is flowing below the danger mark.

o) The shooter aimed at the target.

3. The following sentences have been taken from A.2 ‘Nina is the Winner’ *Unit-Regard for Values) of My English Reader. Underline all the prepositions.

a) Nina was running ahead of all the participants and just behind her was Medha.

b) The Chief guest called Nina to the stage.

c) The girl behind Medha crossed the finishing point.

d) The spectators sat on chairs around the racing track.

The underlined words in the above sentences are also Prepositions.

1. Underline the prepositions in the following story.

A sparrow family lived in a nest on the top of a mango tree in front of a small hut. The family included the father sparrow, the mother sparrow and three baby sparrows. Chichi, the youngest among the three babies, was also the naughtiest of them all. She would often play pranks on the people of the village and tease little children. She would pluck leaves or small fruits from the trees and throw them at people’s heads. Sometimes she would pick small children’s marbles, put them in her beak, and fly over the fields across the village before finally throwing them into the river. Everybody in the village was tired of Chichi’s mischiefs. Even Chichi’s parents scolded her for being so naughty.

2. Complete the following poem by filling the blanks with appropriate prepositions given in the Aid Box.
